Wednesday marked Buffalo's first practice of the week as they prepare for their home opener against the Ravens on Sunday night. The NFL schedule makers wasted no time by putting an epic matchup in the front of the season. Bills-Ravens has something for every NFL fan.
It's a duel between the league's last two MVP quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. It's a rematch of the AFC Divisional Round matchup that came down to the wire. It's running backs James Cook and Derrick Henry trying to repeat their league-leading 16 rushing touchdown seasons from 2024.
These two opponents know each other well. In fact, the two have faced each other five times since 2019. Buffalo has gone 3-2 in those matchups with two wins coming in the playoffs.
Head coach Sean McDermott has a lot of respect for Baltimore and is looking forward to Sunday's challenge.
"They do a really good job as far as building the roster," McDermott said. "They're well-coached and it will be a big challenge for us."
Two players that make the Ravens such a tough opponent are Jackson and Henry. Jackson has been the MVP twice (2019, 2023) and Henry has been an Offensive Player of the Year and All-Pro (2020). They pose different threats and when you combine their skillsets on the ground, it makes for a tough code to crack for opponents.
"It's a unique experience," McDermott said. "I don't know where in college or prior to the NFL where they've tried to tackle a 250-pound running back that's fast. And then a quarterback that is as unique as Lamar and his elite skill sets that he has, not just running but throwing as well."
Jackson averaged 6.6 yards per carry on the ground (1st in NFL) and Henry averaged 5.9 (3rd) last season. The two combined for 20 rushing touchdowns and 2,836 rushing yards when it was all said and done in 2024.
"I think a lot of it just comes down to our execution," middle linebacker Terrel Bernard said of trying to contain Henry. "He's a great player. We know that. We know how explosive he can be, and they have a really good offensive line that he runs behind. It's going to come down to our execution, guys getting off blocks and population to the ball."
The matchup between Allen and Jackson will be the reason why many tune into Sunday night's game. The two rank first (Allen; 85) and second (Jackson; 74) in offensive touchdowns over the last two seasons. They were both drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft and have grown into becoming two of the league's best quarterbacks. Allen and Jackson are known for their ability to extend plays with their legs and their finesse when talking about arm talent.
Allen went off for 40 total touchdowns last year, making it his fifth straight year doing so. Jackson tied for the lead with 45 offensive touchdowns and had the best passer rating (119.6) in 2024.
"Lamar, he's one of the best players to touch the grass, honestly," Allen said. "You can't give him more opportunities than he needs. You can't give him short fields. He'll take advantage of those. So being on the top of our game on the offensive side of the ball."
Another reason why every drive will matter for Buffalo's offense is because they're playing against a Baltimore defense that returns several starters. The Ravens had the best run defense in the league last year allowing an average of only 80 rushing yards per game.
Their secondary is also entirely made up of first rounders after the additions of cornerback Jaire Alexander in free agency and rookie safety Malaki Starks.
"They have a really good front," Allen said. "Best run-stopping front in the league. On the back end, they've invested a lot of first round picks on their DBs and safeties. I think everybody in their back end is a first-round pick…We played them the playoffs, and we understand there's going to be a lot of heightened emotions on both sides. And we're just trying to go out there and have a good week of practice."
Bills captains offer insight on their Week 1 history
The Bills named their captains this week as voted on by the players during a team meeting. Running it back from last year, QB Josh Allen and LB Terrel Bernard were chosen by their peers to wear the 'C' on their chest once again.
For Allen, it's his seventh year in a row being named a captain; for Bernard he continues to show why he earned a contract extension in the offseason with his second year in a row as a captain. Though he's just in his fourth season in the NFL (third as a starter), Bernard's wisdom, maturity and work ethic shine through everyday.
"You watch him play, the way he communicates, the way that he puts his body on the line, the way he talks to his teammates, the way that works," Allen shared."He's in the building, damn near 24-7, working on his body, doing rehab, doing prehab, watching film while he's doing it. Just a true example for guys to learn from on how to be a true pro."
For Bernard, he's ready and willing to take on the responsibility.
"It's an honor anytime you're appointed into a leadership role," he said. "I don't take it lightly. I know it's a responsibility and at the end of the day, I'm grateful for my teammates voting me as a captain. I think it puts responsibility on myself to hold myself to a standard, but to also speak up when I see the standard not being met and hold others to that standard, too."
The first week of the season brings a unique set of challenges. Up-to-date game film on opponents are sparse, team's identities can shift over the course of the offseason and plenty more wrinkles to sort through.
For the Bills, they are 2-2 in their last four season openers — a mixed bag. Two games have featured high-scoring victories — the Rams in 2022 and the Cardinals in 2024 — while the other two have been frustrating losses in which the team scored less than 20 points.
As Buffalo aims to start the 2025 season 1-0, the team's QB offered insight as to why past openers haven't always gone their way. He pointed to himself.
"I think the first and foremost thing, just trying to do too much and trying to play hero ball maybe too early. And over the years, just finding out, like, let the game come to us, especially myself. Throwing check downs early and moving the sticks and just worrying about the play at hand and not the entire drive," Allen said.
Allen specifically mentioned Buffalo's third down offense as one area the team had difficulty executing in the two matchups against Baltimore last season. In Week 4, Buffalo went 3 of 13 (23%) and 5 of 11 (45%) in the Divisional Round. The Bills had the fifth-best third down conversion rate (48.31%) in regular season home games in 2024.
"Their third-down package is really hard to stop. It's hard to see. Luckily we'll be at home and be able to communicate a little bit better than we were early on in the season last year," Allen said.
Defensively, the message has been to hone in on the details and make sure the small things are in order. Bernard will be in the middle of the action Sunday night, reading the cues from the opposing offense and relaying communication and play calls to the Bills defense.
"These first four games are really decided by fundamentals, execution, taking the ball away and taking care of the ball. So that's really been our focus and our mindset," Bernard said.
Bills rookies are ready to experience Bills Mafia in full force
While some Bills players are taking the field for the 10th or 12th season on Sunday, a few Bills will be suiting up for their first NFL game.
Buffalo drafted nine rookies in the 2025 draft with six being on defense. A good portion of the group should suit up for Sunday's matchup against the Ravens. Two of those rookies are defensive tackles T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker.
As they get ready for their first game in Highmark Stadium, they're making sure to get lots of advice from the veterans.
"Don't overthink it," Sanders said of what the vets told him. "I know these are guys we probably watched growing up, but at the end of the day, they're guys on the other team. Just go out there and do what I do, make plays."
Henry is a player most rookies watched growing up. It'll be a tough task going up against one of the best running backs in the league, but Walker is focusing on what he will learn from the matchup.
"You get to really see the mind of a great running back, great quarterback," Walker said. "I know we got James Cook and Josh Allen, but we get to see Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson…Just like James Cook and Derrick Henry. So, getting to see both worlds helps you in the long run."
The two rookies are also eager to see Bills Mafia under the lights.
"I want to see how Highmark stadium is going to be, how Bills Mafia is going to be," Walker said. "I've been hearing stories, hearing all that. I can't wait to see the first game, Sunday night football right here at home."
"These guys say it's one of the craziest places in the league, so I'm hoping to find that out," Sanders added.
Sanders and Walker understand there's a long road ahead as they learn and grow in their first NFL season, but they can't help but be proud of the work that's gotten them to this moment.
"Everything you done sacrificed, gave up on, everything you put your first foot forward for to get to this point in your life," Sanders said. "This is what it's all for, prime time games like this one coming up."
