'Put your head down and work' | Top 3 things to know from Day 1 of Bills Training Camp

Top3Day1web

Wednesday marked the official start to Bills training camp at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY. The Bills took to the field with their goals in mind and a packed crowd cheering them on with every move.

While some players, who are new to the Bills, were in awe to see the fan support, Bills quarterback Josh Allen walked out of the tunnel with a smile knowing Bills Mafia would be roaring with support.

Allen had a clean first day of camp and the defense and offense traded notable plays. Here are the top three things to know from the first practice.

1. Josh Allen shares team message + why they're ready to show the world their operation

As Allen gets ready for his eighth season in blue and red and head coach Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane are gearing up for their ninth, the goals in Buffalo haven't changed. Even with more eyes on the team this preseason due to HBO's Hard Knocks, the Bills are not wavering from who they are.

"We have nothing to hide, we are who we are," McDermott said. "I think the cool part about this is people see us on game day, now they get a chance to see that what we do on Sunday is exactly what we do Monday through Saturday."

"This is what a good organization looks like," Allen said. "And people are going to get a sneak peek into that and just how we operate."

The Bills will have 11 practices in Rochester, which Allen couldn't be happier about.

"Being away and coming here, I mean every moment you're awake you're around your teammates, around your friends, around the strength staff, getting worked on and there's no better way to get better at football than here," Allen said with a smile. "If you love football, you should love camp."

Last year's MVP, who registered a fifth straight season of at least 40 touchdowns, does a great job of setting the standard for the team from Day 1.

"He's always prepared when he shows up," Beane said. "He's not coming here unprepared. And I think his teammates, when he's in the huddle, they're as calm as ever just having Josh Allen in there."

Allen's message to the team as camp kicks off is simple--It's time to work.

"Just put your head down and work," Allen said. "It's two and a half weeks in camp. They go quick, but you can really show who you are as a person, as a player…Let's tune everything out. Give me two and a half weeks of everything that you got, and we'll go from there."

McDermott echoed that sentiment and spoke on the nerves that many feel as they begin to fight for a spot on the 53.

"There's some anxiousness in that meeting this morning and then when they take that field, the biggest thing they got to know is they have what it takes," McDermott shared. "If you don't believe that, it's never going to work."

While the Bills have welcomed plenty of new players to the team this offseason, working towards a new season is also about correcting mistakes from the season prior. When asked about how the offense can improve this year compared to last, the QB put the onus on himself.

"Just a lot of missed opportunities from myself," Allen said. "And I can count probably three touchdowns that I missed Dalton on last year…still too many times I put the ball in harm's way last year, and I know we limited interceptions and turnovers quite a bit. But I still think I can improve on that, and that's the fun part."

Buffalo averaged the second most points per game in the NFL last season (30.9) and they scored a franchise-record 65 total touchdowns. Allen also only had six interceptions.

When Beane was asked the same question, he took it a different direction.

"Maybe we didn't hit, connect on as many deep balls," Beane said. "We took some shots, but that may be an area, but, it's hard to replicate those few of turnovers and to score that many points… I think you just continue to home in on the fine-tuned details, be as balanced as we can."

According to Beane, part of that balance is getting the new wide receivers (Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore, Laviska Shenault) on the same page as the rest and making sure the playmakers who spent part of last year injured (Dalton Kincaid, Curtis Samuel, Keon Coleman) are ready to go.

The goal hasn't changed for McDermott, Beane and Allen. They know their expectations are far greater than the outside noise. The three have a lot of belief in each other and the level of work they're putting in ahead of the season.

"I'm a firm believer that you keep swinging the sword, you keep fighting, you do not give in, you work harder. You use that frustration," Beane stated. "And I can tell you, of course Josh Allen was happy to win the MVP, who wouldn't be? But he would trade that all day, every day to hoist that Lombardi. And he's the tip of the spear for us, and we believe in that. His teammates believe in that, we believe in this coaching staff, we believe in our organization and the plan."

2. "The body is perfectly fine." — DE Joey Bosa is back on the practice field

Bills defensive end Joey Bosa was back practicing on Wednesday after spending most of OTAs on the sidelines due to a calf injury. Bosa was excited to be lining up with his teammates after spending time rehabbing.

"The body is perfectly fine," Bosa said. "Calf is no issue anymore. I was feeling good weeks ago, so I was able to get a full offseason in and train really hard. I feel great coming into camp."

"Couldn't be happier with the work that he's put in to come back healthy and ready to go," Sean McDermott said of Bosa. "And we'll have a rep plan for him and a way to manage things to the best of our ability to try and keep him as healthy as possible."

The 10-year vet hasn't spoken with media in a formal setting since the injury, so he provided context as to how it happened.

"It was just in D-line drills," Bosa shared. "Just a weird thing. I think fatigue from maybe doing something a few days prior."

Thankfully the calf injury turned out to be more minor than originally thought.

"It ended up being a very minor thing," Bosa said. "I improved a lot faster than other people thought I would. It was a good process. Just trying to look at it from a positive lens, take some strain off my body for that time of the year, was able to rehab slowly and do it at a real smart pace."

While Bosa is trying to soak up every second due to missed reps during the spring, he's also savoring being back with the defensive line.

"It's been a while since I've been with the whole group of D-linemen since (I was) playing outside linebacker the last few years," Bosa added. "So, it's fun again being in that environment, being with the big guys in the middle. I think if you have a dominant defensive line, you win a lot of games and your defense plays really well, so it's definitely going to be on us to make an impact."

Making an impact starts with having good chemistry together and knowing how your teammate next to you will move and react to different plays. The defensive line, who comes to camp with 10 new players in the position group, hasn't wasted any time getting to know each other.

"It's obviously important to be around the guys," Bosa said. "It's great here in Buffalo because guys hang out with each other. I've probably hung out outside of football more with these guys in the past six weeks when I was here than maybe my entire career. I mean, we definitely did things (in L.A.)…But it just feels like guys want to be with each other."

3. Practice notes + James Cook and other injury updates

The first day of training camp practice did not disappoint when it came to noteworthy plays. There's always some added juice on Day 1 and both sides of the ball made some great plays. Most of the 7-on-7 and team periods were spent in the red zone, so there were touchdowns-a-plenty but also lots of pressures and sacks as well. Josh Allen also finished the day without any turnovers.

"(It was a) red zone day, things happen really fast," Allen said. "Offensively, didn't put the ball in harm's way today and throwing the ball away down there, it's a good thing. I know it doesn't look good on the stat sheet for you guys, but I had a good day today."

In the first team period, new defensive end Joey Bosa made his presence known with a quick quarterback pressure. In the same period, quarterback Shane Buechele escaped the pocket and rolled out to his right to find wide receiver K.J. Hamler for a clean touchdown.

Later on, cornerback Christian Benford showed up and was consistent throughout practice with multiple pass breakups against different receivers. It wasn't just Benford who had notable PBUs. The best one of practice came from linebacker Baylon Spector. Spector was matched up with a tight end and followed him stride for stride to the end zone where Spector got air and knocked the ball away, which limited a touchdown. The linebacker showcased his athleticism and ability to matchup with different skill players.

In the final period of practice, cornerbacks Tre'Davious White and Maxwell Hairston came alive. On one play, White was matched up with a wide receiver and quickly got sticky coverage and knocked the ball away near the sideline. His teammates erupted with cheers as White dawned a big smile.

"I'm just kind of watching it, but I was like, 'I see you two-seven,'" Brandon Beane said of the play. "And he was like, 'Man, it's good to be home. I'm around family.' And it just, it resonates with you. We're all more comfortable when we're around people we trust, and we enjoy being around and I think Tre embodies that."

Hairston, who's known for his speed, saw a touchdown about to happen and decided to wipe it off the board. The CB showcased his buildup speed by coming out of nowhere to knock the ball away before the receiver could come down with the TD catch. The sideline went wild as they celebrated the rookie's first play of camp. Hairston did a great job of improving as practice went on.

"We'll be smart with him as he gets started here because of the hamstring," McDermott said of Hairston who missed part of OTAs with an injury. "But the biggest thing is that he gets going and gets settled into the defensive system and plays fast. And there's going to be some mistakes. These are young players, and that's an important piece of it."

The defensive line had back-to-back sacks during a team period with one coming from rookie defensive tackle T.J. Sanders and the next from second-year defensive end Javon Solomon. Sanders and Solomon popped up again later sharing a pressure on the same play. Defensive ends Greg Rousseau and Michael Hoecht also pressured the QB. And linebacker Matt Milano and rookie defensive end Hayden Harris also added sacks toward the end of practice.

When it came to the offense, tight end Dalton Kincaid had the biggest play of the day. Allen stepped back in the pocket and found Kincaid in the back of the end zone for a TD. The TE did a fantastic job of making the catch in a high-traffic area as he was moving backwards. Allen did a great job of putting it in the right window. The entire running back room (James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty Johnson) reached the endzone multiple times. Cook looked strong and agile as he weaved his way around the defense for a couple of touchdowns.

James Cook participating in training camp

Cook was present and active for the first day of training camp. Even though the fourth-year player is seeking a new deal, Cook decided to show up for his teammates and lead by example.

"I couldn't be more pleased with James and him being here on time and ready to go," Sean McDermott said. "I had a chance to greet him yesterday, shake his hand, look him in the eye, and he's ready to go."

Brandon Beane said the two spoke during mandatory minicamp and nothing has changed in terms of Beane's want to keep him around.

"When James came in for the mandatory camp, we spoke," Beane shared. "We've always had a good relationship. And as I've said all along, I love James Cook…I want to draft, develop, re-sign our own. It is a business. We have to fit it in."

Beane said Cook looks like he spent a lot of the offseason working to get better and that those are the types of players he wants to pay.

"Of course, who doesn't want to get paid?" Beane said. "And that's the hard part of this job is I do want to pay them all. I mean, I really do, especially the ones that are working hard, they're producing on the field."

The GM said he is hopeful that Cook is here for next year's training camp.

"James fits Buffalo," Beane said. "But sometimes you can't get on the same page or sometimes you're trying to fit it in. There are times guys have left here that we really wanted. We just couldn't make it work. But I can tell you, I'm hopeful, when we're sitting here at next year's training camp that James Cooks is out there practicing and still representing the red, white and blue."

Injury updates

TE Dawson Knox (hamstring), RT Spencer Brown (back), WR Laviska Shenault (lower leg strain) and OL Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (calf) did not participate in Wednesday's practice. Head coach Sean McDermott did not have any updates on when he expects them to be healthy.

McDermott on rookie DT Deone Walker's health (back):

"Deone is not limited. He is off the rep management that he was on in the spring. He feels great, the back is the back, from what I'm told…So we'll see how he and we can manage that as we move forward through those days."

Beane on Dawson Knox (hamstring) and Spencer Brown (back) missing the first day of practice due to injury:

"Dawson was training the other day and tweaked it. He knows his body, and so he'll do everything. He knows this offense…So until he's back out there, you always have some concern. But I feel that the medical team and him have a good idea of what it's going to take and hopefully getting back out there sooner rather than later.

"Spencer, the same. Back flared up a little bit on him. We want to be cautious. It's always different now versus in season. Now you're going to try to be more cautious…So I think we have to realize it's July 23rd today. Let's don't rush something and constantly have setbacks. So hopefully we'll get them back out there soon."
