The Bills had their third and final practice of mandatory minicamp on Thursday afternoon. The day was dominated by the tight ends who had a productive practice.

During the 7-on-7 period, quarterback Josh Allen fired a pass to tight end Dalton Kincaid who had an impressive, contested catch against Taron Johnson. Tight ends Dawson Knox and Zach Davidson also added touchdowns during the period, which ended with a celebratory dance by all the tight ends.

It continued during a team period when Allen found Kincaid in the end zone for a touchdown. The third-year tight end showcased his catch radius as he plucked the ball out of the air.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane said he's seen Kincaid's confidence grow since the start of OTAs.

"He's definitely in a stronger position than he was probably this time a year ago," Beane said. "So, (I'm) excited for Dalton. And you can see the confidence in the knee and the body out there, as we went along, even from three or four weeks ago."

One of the most electric plays of the day came when quarterback Shane Buechele threw a dart across his body to undrafted free agent tight end Keleki Latu who caught the pass in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel had a play to remember during 7-on-7. Allen threw a heater to the back of the end zone and Samuel had to get air to grab the pass and then got his feet just within the lines for a touchdown.

"It feels good," Samuel said. "It's just putting things on tape, no matter if it's pads on, pads off. It just shows coaches, shows the players just things that you're capable of."

Samuel is feeling more comfortable in his second year in Buffalo's offense.

"It feels different being in the same place two years in a row," Samuel added. "It's just going into the second year with more confidence."

The WR had 31 receptions, 253 receiving yards and one touchdown in his first season with the Bills. Samuel missed three games in 2024 due to injury. One of his goals for training camp is to stay healthy.

"Just go into camp healthy," Samuel shared. "Start off hot and just be available, be out there, be present, dominant each and every rep. And just bring that confidence."

Another exciting moment from practice was during a team period when quarterback Mike White found wide receiver Jalen Virgil in the corner of the end zone. Virgil tracked the ball perfectly and made a one-handed grab for the touchdown as he was tightly covered by rookie cornerback Dorian Strong.

Running back James Cook had a nice rep as he hit a hole on the inside and worked his way up the field for extra yards. Wide receiver Keon Coleman also had an impressive catch in busy traffic. Cornerback Ja'Marcus Ingram had an athletic pass breakup where he had to turn his body outward mid-stride in an unnatural way to knock the football away.

"Jimbo will be ready to roll." | Beane on James Cook's participation in mandatory minicamp

Running back James Cook participated in all three mandatory minicamp practices this week after missing voluntary OTAs. When Cook reported to minicamp, the running back was open and honest about wanting to participate to set an example as a leader and work towards the goal of the Super Bowl.

As Cook seeks a new deal, Brandon Beane said the communication between the two parties have been good.

"Our interactions with Jimbo have been good the whole time throughout," Beane shared. "I know he wasn't here, so everyone just draws their own conclusions when you're talking about it's voluntary…Jimbo, he's a pro, he's a competitive dude. He loves to win. Of course, he wants to take care of himself. Everyone does, and we love to see that…It's good to see him. He looks good out there. You can tell he's been working."

Regarding an update on how contract talks are going, Beane wants to keep that in-house.

"I'll keep that between us as far as that's going," Beane said. "But the relationship's very good. I know Jimbo's going to be ready to roll when we get to Rochester."

Buffalo's GM was also asked if he expects Cook to participate in training camp practices.

"You'd have to ask him," Beane said. "He hasn't said, 'Hey, I won't be there. There's no deal.' Or any kind of circumstances. So no, I believe Jimbo will be ready to roll whether there's a deal or not."

Injury updates | Maxwell Hairston and Joey Bosa

Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston did not participate in Thursday's practice due to a tweaked hamstring according to Brandon Beane. It happened toward the end of Wednesday's practice.

"A little tweak in his hamstring area, but he should be fine." Beane said. "He's getting treatment, so should be good to go. He'll rehab it and be ready to go for camp."

Defensive end Joey Bosa missed the entire mandatory minicamp with a calf injury but was able to work off to the side during the week.

"Joey was doing a bunch of his own kind of drill work, as far as get off drills, things that a pass rusher would do," Beane said of his newest pass rusher. "So, do you want him to have a setback? Do you want any of these guys? Do you want Max to tweak something yesterday? No, but it's football."

Beane expects every player who missed time during minicamp to be ready and healthy for training camp. Defensive tackle DaQuan Jones also wasn't present for the final day of minicamp, but Beane confirmed Jones had an excused personal day.

The plan for joint practices in Chicago

The Bills will hold joint practices against the Bears ahead of their preseason game against Chicago on Sunday, August 18. This isn't the first time in recent history that Buffalo has practiced against another team. The Bills had one joint practice against the Steelers last preseason.

Beane wants to do so again to mix up who his players are practicing against.

"Give them some different people to go against, some different schemes, some different defenses," Beane said of joint practices. "Our guys start to know because you practice (against each other) so much, even out here, and then you pick up the camp…You should get tired of beating on the same people over and over…I thought last year the one-day camp, I really liked that…That's what our plan will be, to go there and have one legit practice with them."
