The Bills kicked off the start of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday afternoon, which will consist of three practices before breaking until training camp. Head coach Sean McDermott said every player reported for minicamp but not everyone practiced.
"The other guys that will not practice due to injury at this point at least are K.J. Hamler, Taron Johnson, Cam Lewis, Connor McGovern, Joey Bosa, Baylon Spector, Cole Bishop, and Damar Hamlin," McDermott said. "So, all are in kind of different situations as it relates to coming off injury."
Johnson did end up participating in a limited capacity but running back Ty Johnson did not participate. McDermott said he believes the group who isn't practicing will be back for training camp.
Josh Allen rocking some new hardware
Quarterback Josh Allen was back on the field for mandatory minicamp after missing the last week of OTAs due to a big life event — the MVP got hitched. Allen and singer/actress Hailee Steinfeld got married over Memorial Day Weekend.
"We're back to football, got some hardware now," Allen said with a smile while sporting his wedding band. "So, good to go."
McDermott was in attendance and said it was a wonderful wedding.
"Just great to see two really special families coming together," McDermott said.
Allen understands it's been a notable offseason for him with the whirlwind of life events – an MVP award, a new contract and a wedding. The QB said getting married tops the list.
"I mean they've all been big none other than marrying my best friend," Allen said. "And she makes everything easier, so I don't really focus on the other stuff. That was the most important decision I'll make in my life, and I made the right one."
While the QB has grown and matured in a lot of ways, McDermott shared he hasn't noticed a change in Allen's character due to an MVP title, a new ring and more money in the bank.
"What I've seen is this truly genuine, authentic person who, yes, is in the limelight, yes, is one of the top players in our league, and maybe the top player in the NFL, but he is so authentic, so down-to-earth, so relatable," McDermott pointed out. "I think that's really the connection and the cool piece about Josh is because he is who he is."
After a week of celebration, McDermott pointed out that Allen was back to setting the standard as he was the first player in the building on Monday morning.
"It's good to have him back," McDermott explained. "…Life comes up and it's been fun to watch him grow but really appreciate him being here because this is his team. He is our unquestioned leader and leader of the team."
Now that Allen's back in football mode, the eighth-year quarterback is focused on building chemistry with his teammates this week.
"The goal for minicamp is just to get loose, get back to throwing some footballs and getting on the same page with some guys," Allen shared. "There were some few mistakes out there today, but that's to be expected. Just learning from new concepts that we're putting in, understanding different body types and guys we're throwing to and just trying to see what guys are good at."
In addition to learning new concepts, Allen is working on fine-tuning different aspects of his game during minicamp and the offseason.
"I think just making sure that my feet are right, knowing that my eyes and feet are working together," Allen described. "As you guys can see, we have Chris Hess here. Just making sure the mechanics are lining up…making sure that I'm as consistent as possible throwing the football."
Mandatory minicamp Day 1 recap: Defense shines with multiple takeaways
The first day of mandatory minicamp proved to be a strong day for the defense. Three players left the day with takeaways, and it was close to being even more.
During the 7-on-7 period of practice, linebacker Joe Andreessen grabbed himself an interception. Later on, during a team period, cornerback Christian Benford provided great coverage that ended in a diving interception. The final interception came on an overthrown pass, which safety Darrick Forrest caught thanks to being in perfect position.
Linebacker Keonta Jenkins came close to have an interception during 7-on-7. Cornerback Dane Jackson also had a great pass breakup during a team period that was close to an interception as the CB extended his body backwards to knock the ball out of the air near the end zone.
Andreessen and Benford had other notable plays during practice. Andreessen batted a pass down and Benford had a nice pass breakup on a big play. Rookie defensive tackle T.J. Sanders also had a notable play during a team period. Sanders blew up a pass by getting his hands on the football to bat the pass down but unfortunately couldn't maintain possession for an interception.
While the work on the field during mandatory minicamp is important, McDermott also believes building a connection is near the top of the list.
"I think more than anything, it's how can we continue to connect now that everybody is here," McDermott said. "Not everybody's going to be practicing, but everybody's here under one roof to continue to connect as a football team…That's going to have to continue in training camp, the connectedness of our team. And then the techniques, the scheme, the playbook and introducing these guys that way."
Allen has several new pieces to connect with on offense like wide receivers Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore and Laviska Shenault.
"It's going to be an adjustment period," Allen said of getting on the same page. "Obviously, I got a little bit of work throughout the OTAs. I was in and out, but I am working hard to get on the same page with them. And they're three guys, again, that move really well. Different body types for all three of them. They're each really good at some things, and we've got to utilize those strengths to our benefit."
The defense saw the biggest overhaul this season with 20 new players added to the roster. The defensive line alone has 10 new faces in the position room. With so much newness, McDermott is excited to see how the new players and returners mesh.
"Really excited about those young guys," McDermott shared. "And it's not just them. They're integrating into a veteran group in some ways and some of the newer players are actually veterans as well so kind of hitting it from three different angles. It's been fun to watch those guys work, work with the coaches and work on their techniques. As I've said before, we're going to go as the D-line goes on the defensive side."
Rookie updates
Buffalo's rookies have now been in the building for about a month. The nine draft picks have had a chance to learn the playbook and implement it during rookie minicamp and OTAs. So far, McDermott is happy with the progress the group is making.
The head coach says first-round cornerback Maxwell Hairston has shown an eagerness to learn in his first month.
"He's learning the playbook, he's learning the techniques, the onboarding process, how life is in the NFL this time of year," McDermott said. "And what you're seeing with Max is…He's been really intent every day on getting better, having a purpose going out to the practice field."
Second-round defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, who batted a pass during practice, has also caught McDermott's eye.
"He's done a really good job," McDermott said. "He and Deone (Walker) kind of pal around a little bit together. They met somewhere along the line, maybe in the Senior Bowl. It's just been fun to watch those guys. You feel like you're trying to educate them in more ways than one, on the grass, in terms of the scheme, the techniques, but also in terms of habits off the field that lead to winning."
Fourth-round defensive tackle Deone Walker wasn't able to practice during rookie minicamp due to injury but is seeing an uptick in playing time for minicamp.
"I believe he's on like four reps per period right now, he went from basically no reps so he's up to four, that'll graduate to five in the next day or two," McDermott shared. "…He's come from a long way away, credit to him, credit to our training staff, and now we're in a position where he can start to rep and get more."
Buffalo went defense heavy in the draft as six of their nine picks play on defense. McDermott said this portion of offseason training is important for the group because he expects to see some of them on the field this season.
"We're going to play a lot of young guys on defense," McDermott said. "That's the way I see it right now, at least there's going to be some youth to our defense and we're going to be counting on a number of those guys to step up for us."
A new veteran in the linebackers room
Buffalo signed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson to a one-year deal on Tuesday morning. Before coming to Buffalo, Thompson spent his entire 10-year career with the Carolina Panthers.
The linebacker was drafted in 2015 when Bills general manager Brandon Beane was Carolina's assistant general manager and McDermott was the defensive coordinator.
"We drafted Shaq when Brandon and I were both there," McDermott said. "Really, really good player, tough, smart…But when you talk about a player that can play more than one position, you talk about a player that can help create a certain toughness or bring a certain toughness with him, nastiness to a defense, to a team, he's all about the right stuff as a player and a person."
Thompson explained one of the reasons why Buffalo was an option was because he stayed in contact with McDermott, Beane and linebackers coach Al Holcomb over the years.
"Just staying in in connection with them, updating them on surgeries and rehab and where I'm at, stuff like that," Thompson said. "I've been there with them in 2015 in Carolina, so kind of just always had that bond there. I was a young pup back in the day, now 11 years, seasoned vet, so time is coming around."
Thompson did not participate in Tuesday's practice because he's working his way back from an injury and surgery that happened last season. The linebacker thinks Buffalo's the best next place for him and was happy to see the defense has a lot of similarities to the one he played in under McDermott in 2015.
"Got a lot of excitement out there, there is a lot of energy," Thompson said. "It's crazy to see all the stuff that they were teaching back then is still implemented now. So, it was good to see, from character, from team building, from team chemistry, just how the whole building is in general, it's good to see and be a part of that again."
Thompson was a big fan of McDermott's back in Carolina. The LB knew it was just a matter of time before he stepped into a head coaching role. He's elated to be back with a coach who he grew to appreciate and respect in just a short amount of time.
"I always knew that he was a great DC back then, I always knew he would be a hell of a head coach, you know?" Thompson said of McDermott. "The way he had us flying around on defense, I knew once he got it through one side, becoming a head coach, he'd get it through the whole team. Coach Sean McDermott is one of those guys that you just want to run through a wall for."
