The preseason is officially a wrap with the initial 53-man roster and practice squad set. The Bills have a couple days of practices and one last break before Week 1 preparation begins.

General manager Brandon Beane met with media on Wednesday to discuss the roster and new practice squad additions. Here are five things to know from his press conference.

CB Tre'Davious White injury update

Cornerback Tre'Davious White suffered a lower leg injury during last Thursday's practice and has yet to return to the practice field. White's status for the season opener is unknown at the moment, but Beane said the CB has a great attitude and is working hard to get back on the field.

"We're rehabbing him as much as we can," Beane said. "Tre's got a great attitude, he's attacking it. Really other than that, we're just going to take it day by day…Wednesday, I think, is the first day an injury report will be due, so we'll see what it is, whether he can practice any or not."

Beane said they're not ruling White out for Week 1 at this point. If he can't go, Beane is confident in their depth.

"We're very confident in who we have," Beane shared. "Obviously our medical team and Tre will do everything they can to be ready for Baltimore. You guys know Tre. He's been through a couple things. Luckily, this is not any type of season-ending thing."

S Jordan Poyer and DT Jordan Phillips are back in Buffalo

Two familiar faces are back in Buffalo and on the team's initial practice squad in safety Jordan Poyer and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. The two are known as leaders in the locker room as Poyer spent seven years with the Bills (2017-23) and Phillips is on his fourth stint with the team.

Beane said the two bring lots of value not just to the practice squad but to the team overall.

"We have a lot of history with both of those guys, both of them have had great impacts here," Beane explained. "First off, on the field, but culture, character, leadership, all those things, you can't find enough guys like that."

Poyer has played in 107 games for Buffalo and totaled 22 interceptions, 48 passes defensed and 682 total tackles. Phillips has appeared in 61 games for the Bills and racked up 13.5 sacks, 28 quarterback hits and 90 total tackles.

Beane loves their team-first mentality and thinks it will be a great asset to the younger players.

"That's what I love about both Jordans, they're selfless," Beane said. "Of course, they're competitive. If their number's called, they're going to go out there and do their best. But they also understand -- it's do whatever it takes. Help a guy on practice squad, help a guy on active, help guy prepare for an upcoming opponent."

Why rookie CB Maxwell Hairston landed on Injured Reserve

First-round rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston will unfortunately start the season on Injured Reserve. Hairston will miss at least the first four weeks due to a knee injury he suffered during training camp.

As the rookie works hard to make a comeback, Beane said they placed him on IR because they wanted to give him enough time to get back to a football mindset.

"We believe in him," Beane said. "He's just taking it one day at a time, so really that's it. Like, let's give him every chance. Let's give him basically another a month to get that much further healed and we'll rehab the heck out of it. We can start practicing him as soon as Week 5 begins. Obviously, no promises at this point, we'll see where he's at, but hopefully he's ready to go at that point."

Offensive lineman Tylan Grable will also start the season on IR. Beane said Grable is still in concussion protocol.

WR Tyrell Shavers finds a home on the initial 53-man roster

Wide receiver Tyrell Shavers is a new name on this year's initial 53-man roster. The third-year player flashed during training camp and preseason by showcasing his length, physicality and catch radius. He also showed the coaching staff why he's a good value to the special teams unit. Those things combined were enough to land on the roster.

Shavers is a favorite amongst the team due to his work ethic. Many of his teammates were elated to see him earn a spot.

"Shaves has worked so hard, I commend him," Beane said. "Not only do I think he's continued to improve his game and his feel for our offense, his connection with our quarterbacks, but special teams…I think Shaves has shown that he's earned that opportunity. He'll tell you before I tell you he's still got to continue to work and grow and improve but we have a lot of confidence in him."

The WR spent his rookie season on the practice squad after being signed by the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2023. Shavers made strides after that first season and saw action in three games last season. In one of those games, Shavers produced. In Week 17 against the Jets, his first career NFL reception went for a 69-yard touchdown.

The third-year player is ready to do whatever is asked of him in his first season on the active roster.

"Shaves is a team player, whether it's the run game, running a guy off to clear out for someone else or whether he needs to run the slant route," Beane said. "…When he's out there, if the defense says throw it to Shavers, Josh (Allen) is going to let it rip or Mitch (Trubisky) or whoever's in the game. And there's a lot of trust with him, again, not just with the backup quarterbacks, but with number 17."

A new face on the practice squad

The Bills have plenty of familiar faces on this year's practice squad – players who are coming back to Buffalo after playing elsewhere or players who have spent the entire offseason with the team.

That's not the case for safety Sam Franklin Jr. after he spent the offseason and training camp with the Denver Broncos.

Beane expressed they wanted to sign the safety because of his prowess as a special teamer.

"He's a safety by position, but he's made his name on special teams in this league," Beane shared. "And so, a standout gunner, kick cover player."

Another reason why the Bills were interested in Franklin was because he crossed paths with special teams coordinator Chris Tabor when the two were in Carolina (2022-23).

"Chris Tabor had him in Carolina as well, so there was some familiarity…Excited to add Sam into the mix. And again, we'll take it day by day and see how quickly we can get him up to speed," Beane said.
