Inside the two-year long design process as Buffalo Bills unveil 'Cold Front' uniforms for Nike's Rivalries series

There's nothing quite like playing your rival under the lights. The Buffalo Bills will be wearing their new 'Cold Front' uniforms for Week 5 on Sunday Night Football against AFC East foe New England Patriots.

The 'Cold Front' uniform is more than a look — it's the city's DNA stitched into fabric. When you think Buffalo Bills Football, you think ice in the air, grit in the soul, and a city that thrives in the cold. It's not just iconic. It's Buffalo.

While Nike's Rivalries program was only announced publicly during the NFL Draft in April, the inception of the initiative took place right before the 2023 season. The Bills' in-house creative design staff spent the last two years collaborating with Nike on the 'Cold Front' uniforms.

As concepts of different themes for the uniforms were brainstormed throughout the 2023 season, one idea rose above the rest.

"The clear choice was to celebrate our region's climate, especially when it comes to later in the season," said Bills Director of Design Aaron LaPorta.

So, the process of making a winter-themed jersey began late in 2023. To accurately reflect this image of a frozen state on an already white uniform, the Bills design team and Nike made a bold decision early on: Remove the red.

Visually, red means warmth and in order to create a true icy and snowy feel, it needed to be stripped away.

"That was a that was kind of a big decision for us, because we've never done anything like that," LaPorta explained.

By removing a major color, the Bills creative staff had to explore new ways to elevate blue, white and gray.

"We don't want to look like another team. We want to have our own identity. So how do we achieve that?" LaPorta said.

Buffalo Bills players debut the team's new 'Cold Front' uniform to be worn Week 5 vs. the Patriots. These uniforms were designed by the Bills' in-house creative design team in collaboration with Nike and the NFL. The 'Cold Front' uniforms bring to life the look and feel of an icy, snowy Buffalo winter.

How to freeze a white uniform

Every great uniform starts at the top. The helmet is the same white shell as Buffalo's primary home and road uniforms, only for this set, small metal flakes throughout the helmet give it a shiny finish.

The biggest change fans will immediately notice is the color of the iconic charging buffalo that is now frosty and metallic filled with a bright royal blue outline. Separating the two charging Buffalo logos is a redesigned center stripe on the top of the helmet. It's one of LaPorta's favorite features that he and his design team drew up.

"One of the coolest details is the center stripe on the helmet. What we did was we took the stripe and like dropped it in ice, so it kind of froze," he said.

Along with the shiny flakes on the overlay, the center stripe is metallic colored and made to resemble cracked ice as it extends across the helmet.

A key question emerged as the designers moved to other areas of the uniform: How can you add snowy elements on a white jersey and white pants? The Bills creative team spent time looking at how snow looks in different settings for inspiration.

"A lot of the imagery was just some of our snow games, a lot of bison and snowstorms," said Bills graphic designer Sean Pantling. "Just how that snow sticks to the tough to their fur, how it kicks up when we're running through the snow, when there's snow on the field, and just the explosions of snow, and trying to capture that."

The shoulders of the jersey feature a cracked-ice texture with speckled white pattern resembling fresh snowfall on a bison's fur.

The Bills continued to push the boundaries with the jersey sleeves. The sleeves are capped off with a bold and shiny low-poly chrome charging buffalo. It's the first time in franchise history the charging buffalo logo has been stitched into the sleeves.

"It's such a cool feature. It added this extra bling to our uniform that we've never really had before, and it was just so unique. It felt like frozen and ice with that low poly pattern," LaPorta said.

Moving to the numbers, the frosty metallic look is present again in the fill with a bright royal blue border around it to help the numbers pop, especially on the TV broadcast.

"We really wanted to push the grays and the metallics and do something that we haven't done in the past," Pantling said.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen shows off the details of the team's Nike Rivalries uniform. Featuring unique elements on the helmet, jersey and pants, Buffalo's 'Cold Front' set captures the scene of the city during winter.

A jersey made for Buffalo and Bills Mafia

While the snowy, icy textures on the uniform set the stage for a winter-themed appearance, two crucial details tie it all together to make it uniquely Buffalo.

First is 'B-U-F-F-A-L-O' spelled out above the numbers on the front plate of the jersey instead of 'B-I-L-L-S'. It's the first uniform in franchise history that recognizes the city on the instead of the team's name.

"This is a story about our city and our region, so we decided to lean into the word Buffalo. We've never done that. It was an obvious choice, and it was a way to celebrate our city," LaPorta said.

One final touch that won't be visible to fans on game day but will be visible to Bills players is the wording 'Bills Mafia' stitched on the inside.

"That's really a tribute to our fans… when it's freezing and cold and all that you know the fans are there. Bills Mafia is there," LaPorta said. "It was important to us to honor them."
