Sean McDermott's thoughts on NFL trade deadline, Bills' young defensive players shining and injury updates heading into Week 10

Three things we learned from Monday's media availability with Bills head coach Sean McDermott, offensive coordinator Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich:

Sean McDermott's thoughts on upcoming trade deadline

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. and the Bills could be a team in the market, given the number of injuries the team has suffered this season. While it takes two sides for a deal to come to a fruition, Bills head coach Sean McDermott is confident that however it shakes out will be in the best interest of the team

"Over the years, what we've understood works, is I shared my vision for the team, where I think we're at and where I think we could use some help," McDermott said of his conversation with Beane. "We go back and forth in conversation style there.. I believe my job is to share where I believe our team is and what we need to do moving forward. From there, it's really his stage."

If there are any potential players the front office thinks could be deadline targets, typically Beane will ask McDermott to go over their film first to see how that player would fit with Buffalo.

"He'll brief me on some things, maybe some thoughts, maybe some kind of irons in the fire that he wants my opinion on. So he'll have me look at someone or a couple of guys and that's really my involvement in it."

Young defensive players shine in big moments

Buffalo invested several draft picks to address needs in the secondary over the last two seasons. Sunday's win showed a glimpse at how it's all coming together with CB Maxwell Hairston, S Cole Bishop and DB Jordan Hancock.

Bishop and Hairston were responsible for all five of the team's pass breakups against Kansas City — Buffalo averaged 2.42 PBUs per game prior to Week 9. While not officially recorded as a pass breakup, Hancock was in the mix at the end of the game on the Hail Mary attempt, batting Patrick Mahomes' pass to the ground.

McDermott shared that it's a thrilling feeling as a coach to watch the plays back a day later in the film room and get a true sense for how each of them have developed.

"I'm going through the defensive film and with the defensive staff and in the room and just watching players. We get a stop — and the players are coming off the field — and you got Cole out there in the back end, you got Max, you got Jordan Hancock. Some young guys out there that haven't played a whole lot of football, and you're excited for them because you see them and their excitement."

Bishop had his best game as a pro, leading the team in tackles and recording four pass breakups. Not only were the four pass breakups a career-high, they also came in pivotal moments.

Bishop knocked down a pass in the flat to WR Xavier Worthy to deny him a first down on 3rd and 3 in the second quarter and the very next play swatted the ball down in front of Rashee Rice to force a turnover on downs.

The second-year player was also in tandem with CB Ja'Marcus Ingram on the first Hail Mary attempt at the end of the game to bat down a ball in the endzone.

"I think it's always been there," DC Bobby Babich said of Bishop's maturity and instincts. "Hopefully this is the moment for him where it's slowed down. Every week's a different week. He's got to continue to grow. But he puts the time in."

For Hairston, he once again split reps with CB Tre'Davious White and recorded his first career INT in just his second NFL game. McDermott praised Hairston for not letting the moment get too big for him and staying disciplined throughout.

"You don't always get a breakthrough moment like that early. So that's good," he said. "Now we got to go back to being humble and staying with his process."

Injury updates going into Week 10

As expected, the Bills placed Michael Hoecht on Injured Reserve due to a torn Achilles and he will miss the remainder of the season.

That was the only in-game injury the team had to report from Sunday and several players who missed the game are getting closer to returning.

DT DaQuan Jones (calf) , WR Joshua Palmer (ankle) and LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring) are all moving in the right direction and McDermott shared he expects all of them to practice in some capacity this week.

CB Taron Johnson (groin) also missed Week 9 and McDermott shared that it's possible but not certain Johnson is on the practice field soon.

"One day at a time. Don't know for sure, kind of like those other guys," he said.

The Bills got less encouraging news on CB Dorian Strong who was placed on IR on Oct. 4 with a neck injury. It does not sound like the Bills expect him to return soon and McDermott declined to elaborate on the full extent of the timeline out of respect to Strong.

"It's not good based on the reports I'm getting," he said. "It's not moving in the direction we'd like it to at this point."
