Buffalo Bills vs. NY Jets Game Predictions | Week 18

010425-ray-davis-game-predictions

The Buffalo Bills (11-5) are 7.0-point favorites against the NY Jets (3-13) at Highmark Stadium on Sunday. The game kicks off at 4:25 pm and will air on CBS.

Here are some additional notes for the final regular season game at Highmark Stadium:

  • Bills have won 5 of their last 6 against the Jets
  • Bills have won 5 straight home games against the Jets
  • Jets have lost 4 straight games by 20 or more points
  • Bills are 26-5 in December/January regular season games since 2020

The Bills will hope to go out of their long-time stadium with a bang.

Florio's pick: Bills 42, Jets 10.

Simms's pick: Bills 24, Jets 16.

The Bills are playing only for seeding, so it will be interesting to see how they handle this one. Do they sit Josh Allen? Does it matter? The Jets are so bad right now that it won't. They are lifeless. Bills take it -- no matter who plays.

Pick: Bills 27, Jets 12

The Bills should think about giving Josh Allen and James Cook a little breather here, given the division is out of reach. What can help is the factthat the Jets are putting out a shell of an offense and defense that Buffalo can handle with top backups at home. The Jets need to wake up and show Aaron Glenn some positive notes late while the Bills take some rest.

Pick: Bills win 21-13 but fail to cover the spread.

The Bills cannot win the AFC East – so Sean McDermott could rest starters for the home finale against the Jets. New York averages 11.5 points through a four-game losing streak. Buffalo is 0-3 ATS when favored by 10 points or more this season – and not knowing the starters makes it a tough call.

Pick: Bills 23, Jets 13

What we're hearing on the Jets: It's all about draft position for New York, currently projected for the No. 2 spot, per ESPN's FPI. The Jets could be as high as No. 2 or as low as No. 7, a wide variance that would have a huge impact on their pursuit of a QB. Rookie QB Brady Cook makes his fourth start. What we're hearing on the Bills: With the Bills locked into a wild-card spot, the odds are high that Sunday will mark the final game at the currently named Highmark Stadium, which opened in 1973. Injuries and rest will factor into the Bills' decision regarding who will play as the franchise prepares to honor the stadium. "As it relates to the game and different things, there's obviously a lot of different paths and approaches we could take," coach Sean McDermott said. "But at the end of the day, the one I always come back to is what's best for the team." -- Alaina Getzenberg

Stat to know: Bills QB Josh Allen has 14 rushing touchdowns this season. He is one away from tying the NFL single-season record for the most by a QB (Allen and Jalen Hurts both rushed for 15 touchdowns in 2023). -- ESPN Research

Bold prediction: Cook will attempt fewer than 30 passes for the first time in a game this season. Even though Cook has reached that mark, the Jets have been the most run-heavy team in the league relative to expectation (per NFL Next Gen Stats), and the Bills have the second-most run-inducing defense. -- Walder

What's at stake: The Bills can clinch the No. 5 seed with a win and losses by the Texans and Chargers -- or a win, plus Chargers and Jaguars losses. Buffalo would clinch the No. 6 seed with a win, plus a Chargers win and a Texans loss -- or a win, plus a Chargers loss and wins by the Texans and Jags. The Bills could also clinch the No. 6 seed with a win, plus Chargers and Texans wins, a Jags loss and then five wins from either Cowboys, Rams, Dolphins, Vikings, Eagles, Steelers, Seahawks or Bucs. Maldonado's pick: Bills 24, Jets 9

Moody's pick: Bills 27, Jets 16

Walder's pick: Bills 26, Jets 16

FPI prediction: BUF, 90% (by an average of 19.8 points)

Why Tom picked the Bills: In retrospect, I probably didn't need to deliberate as much as I did when trying to pick the winner of the first meeting between these two teams back in Week 2, when the possibility still existed that the Jets were going to be as competitive all year as in their Week 1 fight with the Steelers. Buffalo coasted to a 30-10 triumph, handing the Jets the first of eight losses by 13 points or more this season, tied for the most in the NFL. They've had their share of narrower defeats, too -- the other five, in fact, have come by one score or less -- but not since Week 7. Can Brady Cook and Co. make this one closer if the Bills rest Josh Allen and other key players ahead of the playoffs? Sure, maybe. But there's one thing about this matchup that remains as true today as it did in September: When it comes to picking an actual winner, I can't bring myself to trust the Jets.

Davenport: Jets (+7)

That this will be the last game at Ralph Wilson Stadium is kind of a bummer, although at least the Bills didn't build another sterile, character-less dome.

Buffalo isn't going to play anyone who has so much as the sniffles, and while the Jets may well be the NFL's worst team not named the Raiders they will at least be playing some first-teamers. If the Jets can't cover this spread against the Bills' JV squad, then everyone should be fired—including Woody Johnson.

Gagnon: Bills (-7)

The Jets have left the building. They've lost four straight games by 23-plus points and are coming off quite possibly the worst December in NFL history. And now there should be some stellar energy behind the Bills for their final game at their legendary stadium. There's a risk Buffalo phones this one in because the division title is out of reach, but that might not matter considering that the Jets appear to be out of gas.

Jets: Davenport
