Buffalo Bills at New York Jets Game Predictions | Week 2

091425-bills-jets-ray-davis

The Buffalo Bills are 6.5-point favorites against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium this Sunday. The game is slated to start at 1 pm and the game will air on CBS.

Here are some additional notes on this week's game:

  • Bills were the only AFC East team to win a game in Week 1
  • Jets have won two of the last three games against the Bills at MetLife Stadium
  • Bills have won three consecutive games against the Jets
  • Bills have won eight straight AFC East games when Josh Allen has at least one pass attempt
  • Bills are 24-6 against divisional opponents since 2020 - the NFL's best divisional record in that span

This is a tough spot for the Bills coming off their comeback victory over the Ravens on Sunday night and now playing a team from their division that lost at home. Josh Allen has had troubles in this stadium against this team, and this will be no different as the Jets defense plays well. It's close, but Allen will win it late.

Pick: Bills 24, Jets 21

Buffalo runs the risk of a letdown spot after that crazy comeback in Week 1, but should be able to leave New Jersey with a win over an improved Jets team.

Prediction: Buffalo wins 27-17.

Hanford: Bills (-7)

On the one hand, this feels like the kind of game we've seen from the Bills in previous years, where they play down to their opponent, especially in MetLife Stadium, where they've had more than their share of struggles.

On the other hand, though, it's hard to believe the New York offense can duplicate its performance from Week 1.

This is purely a gut call, but I like Josh Allen to exorcise some of his recent demons against the Jets and give the Bills a 10-point win on the road.

Moton: Jets (+7)

The Bills have either won by three points or lost to offensively inept Jets teams in their last three trips to East Rutherford, New Jersey. This time, they will face a New York squad with a rejuvenated offense that features Justin Fields and Breece Hall on the ground.

Last week, the Jets ran the ball for 182 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, expect Gang Green to operate with more ground-and-pound action in a tight contest with a Bills team that gave up a league-high 238 rushing yards in Week 1.

Predictions

Bills: Gagnon, Hanford, Knox

Jets: Davenport, Moton, O'Donnell, Sobleski

Tyler Dragon: Buffalo Bills (-6.5)

Josh Allen is an early front runner for MVP after his Week 1 performance. The Jets will make it tough on him, but Buffalo is the better team.

Christopher Bumbaca: Buffalo Bills (-6.5)

Magic number 7 here. Jets will look good again though, Buffalo just the dominant force in the AFC East matchup.

Jon Hoefling: Buffalo Bills (-6.5)

As great as Justin Fields looked in Week 1, he is still not in the same atmosphere as Josh Allen. Bills by two scores.

Jordan Mendoza: New York Jets (+6.5)

How will Josh Allen and company follow up that electric comeback? They should be able to get past the Jets, but Justin Fields and company look real promising. Another high-scoring game could be in store.

Lorenzo Reyes: New York Jets (+6.5)

I think the Bills win this game, but I think the Jets are better than most people think they are. If New York can continue to be a threat on the ground like it was against a very good Steelers defense, I see this one being closer than a touchdown.

Blake Schuster: Buffalo Bills (-6.5)

The Jets might not be awful, but the Buffalo Bills are on another level of great right now.

Why Tom picked the Bills: I can see the Jets' path to a potential upset, if they are able to catch the Bills sleeping a little coming off their season-opening mega-comeback. Can I see a path to actually picking the Jets here, though? That's tougher, and not just because their own adrenaline levels might still be subsiding after putting together their most inspiring performance in recent memory. Yes, Justin Fields and Co. provided some real proof in their close loss to the Steelers that things really will be different under Aaron Glenn. They are also still in the "making headlines with dramatically timed cuts" phase of the rebuilding life cycle. And we all know where Buffalo stands. Would I really base my decision on a few minutes of possession in a game that took place last week? Well ... yes, when said minutes are of the potentially season-defining variety. If 40 points wasn't enough for Lamar Jackson to hold off Josh Allen, how many would Fields have to score to feel safe? 50? 75? New York could put up a strong fight -- but it will end in a nice, normal win for the Bills.

The Jets have shown improvement. But the early-season schedule is doing them no favors.

Florio's pick: Bills 34, Jets 21.

Simms's pick: Bills 31, Jets 27.

The Bills need to be wary of a hangover from the thrilling comeback win led by Josh Allen with Justin Fields and the Jets' offense also riding a big high despite heartbreaking defeat. The Jets just don't have enough to finish them with the lesser defense.

Pick: Bills win 24-20 but fail to cover the spread

What does Aaron Glenn add to this AFC East rivalry? New York has won two of the last three home meetings against the Bills. Justin Fields was efficient in his first start and quickly re-established a connection with college teammate Garrett Wilson. The Bills have too much on offense around Josh Allen, but New York will hang around.

Pick: Bills 27, Jets 21

What we're hearing on the Bills: An issue for Buffalo in Week 1 was limiting the running game after giving up a league-high 238 rushing yards. The Jets put up the fourth-most rushing yards in Week 1 (182 yards) and slowing them down will be more difficult with DT Ed Oliver, who is coming off a big game, dealing with an ankle injury. "We need to get those things corrected, and we will," defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said when asked about the run defense. "We'll be very intentional this week about getting those things." -- Alaina Getzenberg

What we're hearing on the Jets: The Jets always have scoring problems against the Bills -- they've been held under 23 points in the past 12 meetings -- but there's a renewed confidence on offense after a 32-point showing in Week 1. The running game is a big part of "our DNA," offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said. Result: 11 explosive plays against the Steelers, three more than their weekly goal. -- Rich Cimini

Stat to know: Josh Allen has 18 career turnovers against the Jets, the most by any quarterback against a single opponent since he entered the league in 2018. -- ESPN Research

Bold prediction: Jets CB Brandon Stephens will be targeted at least nine times as the nearest defender, tying the high-water mark for any defender in Week 1. Stephens is coming off a rough first game as a Jet in which he gave up 75 yards on seven targets and is also coming off a shaky final season in Baltimore. With Sauce Gardner playing opposite him, expect Buffalo to target Stephens. -- Walder

Fantasy nugget: Breece Hall faces a Bills defense that gave up 29.2 fantasy points to Derrick Henry last week and has struggled against RBs dating to last season. Hall is coming off a performance in which he stockpiled 21 touches and 16.5 fantasy points. He has averaged 15.5 fantasy points per game against the Bills in his career. See Week 2 rankings. -- Moody

Betting nugget: The Bills have covered three straight meetings against the Jets. Read more. -- ESPN Research

Maldonado's pick: Bills 22, Jets 21

Moody's pick: Bills 36, Jets 27

Walder's pick: Bills 27, Jets 16

FPI prediction: BUF, 65.5% (by an average of 6.3 points)
